Rack Designer

Drag & drop servers, switches, firewalls, storage, UPS and PDUs into a rack — and watch power, heat, weight and PDU load update live. Plan multiple racks, then export a clean PNG or JSON. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How the numbers are calculated

Every metric updates live as you place gear — here is exactly what each one means.

Power (W / kVA)Sum of every device nameplate wattage. kVA = W ÷ 0.9 (power factor) ÷ 1000.
Load (A)Current draw at 230 V line voltage: A = W ÷ 230. Size your PDU and breaker above this.
Heat (BTU/hr)Cooling load: BTU/hr = W × 3.412. Everything a device consumes becomes heat to remove.
Weight (kg)Sum of realistic per-class device weights — check it against your rack’s static load rating.
Usage (%)Occupied U ÷ total U. Leave headroom for airflow, cable management and growth.

Rack planning tips

  • Put the heaviest gear (UPS, storage arrays) at the bottom — it lowers the centre of gravity and keeps the rack stable.
  • Reserve 1–2U of blanking panels between hot zones so cold aisle air isn’t recirculated through gaps.
  • Keep a PDU per power feed (A/B) and split dual-PSU servers across both for redundancy.
  • Group switches near a cable manager and patch panels to keep runs short and serviceable.
  • Aim for ~70–80% U usage max — a fully packed rack fights airflow and leaves no room to grow.
